To fulfill its mission, the Rome Area History Museum invites college and university students to join us in exploring and presenting the many stories that make up the history of Rome and the surrounding area. RAHM offers students several opportunities to develop various skills while gaining valuable experience. An internship at RAHM is a challenging, educational experience designed for undergraduate and graduate students interested in pursuing a career in museum practice, archival administration, or historical scholarship. Working alongside RAHM staff members in a tutorial arrangement, interns gain valuable skills and training in their chosen field.
Ongoing unpaid internship opportunities are currently available in the following areas:
Duties: In order to better serve local school systems through our programming, RAHM is developing a new docent training program. The intern will take the lead in developing this training program and putting it into practice. The intern will also develop programs for school groups on topics such as maps and transportation, quilting and other forms of early recycling, and civic responsibility. Intern will train volunteers to run the programs and act as a back up to the volunteers. Intern will handle the marketing of the programs via press releases, radio interviews, brochures, fliers, posters, etc.
Collections Intern
Duties: Intern will gain valuable and practical experience in the registration process of objects and archival collections. This includes inventories, condition reports, photographing or scanning objects, labeling, indexing, cataloging, and housing. Preventive conservation techniques will be used to provide a safe environment for the collections. Data entry of collections records in PastPerfect software. Inventory and assess light sensitive documents and objects in permanent exhibits.
Administration Intern
Duties: Interns will gain valuable and practical experience in museum operations. This includes public relations; accounts payables and receivables; deposits; financial reporting; recruiting, scheduling, and managing volunteers; sending mailings to members; assisting with fundraising and programming events; and assisting with grant proposals. Intern will also assist the gift shop with reporting and data entry of sales.
Duties: Intern will conduct oral histories on players, radio announcers, managers, and fans. Intern will conduct research, write drafts for various text panels, work with graphic design company to provide them access to loaned photographs and documents, handle documentation of loaned and donated objects, and assist with overall design of exhibit.

We are proud of the many wonderful volunteers we have at the Rome Area History Museum. Volunteers are essential to the daily operations of this museum. We currently are looking for volunteers to help with the following:
Front Desk Volunteer - Greets visitors, takes admission, answers phones, helps with mass mailings, calls to confirm group tours, copies as needed, clips newspaper articles referencing the museum, and answers questions from visitors. Data entry of the guest registry into the computer would be helpful but not required. Volunteer would report to the assistant director. Hours are 10-3 Tuesday-Saturday. We ask that Administrative Volunteers commit to two days per month.
Docent – Conducts focused programs for various age groups, conducts group tours, provides feedback on all programs. RAHM provides training. Volunteer would report to the assistant director. Hours depend on scheduling. We ask that docents work at least one day every two months.
Archives Volunteer – Assists patrons with questions regarding Rome history. Assists with research for exhibits. Volunteer would report to the archivist. Hours are flexible. We ask that volunteers commit to one day/month.
Museum Store - Assists with customer service, sales, and inventory.
Volunteers are also needed for special projects and special events. We have been very fortunate to have groups from United Way and Berry College perform services at the Museum.
