Museum Publishes New History of Rome
The History Press of Charleston, South Carolina is proud to present this new title from Jerry Desmond, Executive Director of the Rome Area History Museum. Georgia’s Rome: A Brief History tells the story of the city’s founding, its upheaval in the Civil War, its rebirth from the ashes of that conflict, the growth of its industry and the origins of its vibrant college, medical and arts communities. The book also focuses on the leaders and personalities who created much of the city’s history. Many of the over 60 illustrations in the book are from the Museum’s extensive photograph collection, some published here for the first time. The book is on sale at book stores in the region. Fifty percent of the proceeds from the sale of the book at the History Museum’s gift shop at 305 Broad Street benefit the museum.

The Ride of John Wisdom CD - $9.35
What if radio had been available on May 3rd, 1863? For sure, John Wisdom would not have needed to make his ride. A simple announcement on radio would have solved the problem of alerting Rome to the impending danger of a Yankee attack. But it would be 59 years before radio came on the scene in 1922. However, this CD, created exclusively for the Rome Area History Museum, supposes that radio was in the area, and dramatically tells the story of what happened that changed history in the area between Rome and Gadsden, Alabama. It is re-created here just as if local radio stations sent reporters out to "get the story."
John Wisdom, known locally as "The Paul Revere of the South," rode @70 miles from Gadsden to warn the citizens of Rome of a raid of 2,000 Federal troops in May of 1863. During his 11 hour ride (mostly at night), he used up five horses (one mule), arriving in the nick of time to save the city (including his mother) and its iron foundry from destruction. All proceeds from the sale of this dramatic re-creation benefit the Rome Area History Museum.
